The Ultimate Flawless Makeup Routine

Estee Lauder Double Wear and Josie MaranI’ve always felt that I’ve achieved flawless makeup with the products I regularly use.  If you look at some of my makeup tutorials, I share which foundations and base products I used.  I also did a post sharing what my top 5 foundations are but now, I have a new addition to share with you that wasn’t on my original list!  It’s Estee Lauder Double Wear!   When my six year old comments that I have flawless makeup and skin, then something is seriously different and it’s not my imagination!   So this morning, I immediately hit the blog to share a tip that  created the most stunning and flawless makeup finish I have ever worn in my life!

Prior to yesterday, I did not own any Estee Lauder products.  I was just never a fan and it’s what my grandmother wore so I never saw it as a youthful or contemporary brand.  However, I’ve heard a lot about the Double Wear foundation and I decided I would give it a try.   I try to blog about things that are way above or below average.  For more general items, I will usually share product posts on Instagram so hopefully you are following me there.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Overview

Estee Lauder Double Wear is a full coverage foundation.  If you prefer light weight, sheer, and more natural looking foundations then I don’t think you would like this one.  But if you are like me, and you want absolutely full coverage, then this could be a game changer for you but there’s a trick I used that made a difference.

Double Wear is a very thick formula that can actually be drying if you wear it every day.  That warning was issued by the sales person (way to increase your sales!) and it did concern me but I switch between 4 -5 different foundations so I wasn’t overly concerned.   I was easily able to find a good match with 20 shades to choose from and I felt the cost was reasonable.   The bottle was $38 USD which is not the cheapest but it’s not the most expensive department store make up make up either.  The bottle is glass, there is no pump, and you receive 1 fluid ounce of product.  I tried the Double Wear concealer as well but NARS Radiant Concealer offers better and less detectable coverage.

One tip I always suggest when going to try out new foundation is to run your best matching foundation through an on line tool such as MatchMyMakeup or Findation.  These on line tools do an outstanding job of recommending tones in different brands based on what you already use.  They will even tell you if a shade is slightly darker or more yellow or pink than what you entered as the baseline.

How did I achieve the ultimate flawless makeup?

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair skin careI’m not sure if this contributed to the end result or not but I exfoliated first.  I do this all the time but my makeup has never looked the way it did when I used the Double Wear.  But, for the record, I exfoliated well and then I applied Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum followed by their Advanced Time Zone Moisturizer prior to applying my makeup.  I actually bought a kit they were offering for $65 USD that came with a full size night serum, the moisturizer, and an eye cream.  I forgot to use my primer but if I would have, the results could have been even better, if that’s possible!

The next step and is what I did different and I believe this is the key to the most flawless makeup I have ever worn.  I poured about a quarter sized amount of foundation on the back of my hand and added 3 drops of Josie Maran pure argan oil light and blended the two together and applied it to my skin.

Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil I thought the argan oil would minimize the drying effects of the makeup that I was warned about.  I used my fingers to blend the makeup onto my skin because that seems to give the best finish with this foundation.  Once I had it all on, my skin never looked so flawless and glowy.  I felt like running around the house and screaming “Holy crap everyone, look at this makeup” but I refrained.  As soon as my husband and one of my boys saw me, they both commented on the makeup.  I didn’t even have it set with powder yet or any other products on.

I set the makeup with Estee Lauder’s tinted Finishing Powder. I usually dust my face with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim or Radiant but I didn’t feel it was needed this time. The makeup was so perfect,  I didn’t want to alter it in any way.  I did mix argan oil with MAC Studio Fix and while I noticed an improvement with the Studio Fix finish, it was nowhere near the finish that Double Wear combined with argan oil produced.  I’m confident the effect was the combination of the argan oil and the Estee Lauder full coverage formula.

All the other steps were nothing outside my normal routine.  If you haven’t tried this makeup combined with argan oil, I would highly recommend you do so if you like the full coverage look!   Plus, the argan oil has amazing anti-aging and moisturizing benefits so combining this with any makeup offers you major skin benefits.  Argan oil also helps to minimize the production of sebum so it can help reduce the amount of oil your skin produces.  Before investing in both products, ask Sephora or your favorite makeup store for a sample of the oil so you can try it out at home.  Sephora will always make samples and they are happy to do it so definitely ask.  You should also be able to get a sample of the Estee Lauder foundation from your local department store.

Just curious if any of you are using Estee Lauder Double Wear and what your thoughts are on this foundation?  I was absolutely beside myself with the finish of this product combined with the oil.  If you have the foundation, I would love to know what type of difference you see mixing the foundation with argan oil.  My results were stunning and I hope you have a chance to experiment with this and find it to be as spectacular as I did!

  1. I recently got an argan oil sample, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to use it. I’ll have to try this because I have a big issue with foundations being too drying.

    1. Captive is one of my favorites. It’s the color I wore that helped me build the confidence to go darker and bolder. Without Captive, I am pretty sure I would still only own nudes and soft pinks to this day. Captive was a game changer for me!

    2. Definitely try a couple of drops in your foundation. It will make a huge difference! I have found with one of my foundations it caused the color to change a little bit but not enough to make a difference. It only did it with one MAC foundation I have. Also, argan oil is very good to put in your hair. Just rub it on your hands and apply a little to your hair. And … I know it seems weird being an oil but you can put it directly on your skin and it’s very moisturizing and actually helps with controlling the production of sebum. So, it’s really good just on it’s own. Lots of great things. I’ve been operating off samples for a while and I put a giant bottle of Josie Maran light argan oil on my Santa wish list. =)

    3. Hi..I have just started using double wear in colour shell.its amazing… I don’t like the matt finish so I sheer it out with 2 drops of organic argan oil so thats not heavy looking on the skin. I have combination skin with oily t zone. I have found argan oil to be amazing and very youthful with double wear and i dont have to finsh off with powder. It lasts till I take it off at night time.

      1. That sounds wonderful! I absolutely love using argan oil. There is a new version of the Double Wear out that is a little lighter than the original. I haven’t tried it yet and I’m very interested in it. Have you tried that one yet?

  2. I just recently purchased estee lauder double wear and I was so disappointed by how it emphasized dryness and wore on my skin. I was expecting amazing things! Thank you so much for this tip – I’m definitely going to move my Argan oil from the bathroom to my vanity TODAY because there are a few foundations that I have that could benefit from this. I never even thought about trying it! Usually I just try to mix foundations if one isn’t working for me … Definitely trying this! THANK YOU!

  3. Woww, excellent find! =) Haha, I really appreciate the honesty of the salesperson, that’s the way they all should be… I also like how your family comments on your makeup, so sweet! Your makeup always looks flawless and glowing to me, so I’m surprised you managed to make it look even more perfect. Wonderful job!

    1. It was totally cute that Noah noticed the difference. He also likes to help me pick out a lipstick and then if I’m wearing a color, he’s always interested to see if he can get a kiss mark on his hand. LOL
It was really different when I combined these two products. I now need to go buy a giant bottle of Argan oil because I have the little 100 point sample bottle from Sephora.

  4. I have both of these products at home! I am going to have to give them a try together. DW is one of the few foundations that last through my 12 hour workday.

    1. I can’t wait to hear what you think of the combination. I wore it today and I just love knowing that the makeup is actually good for your skin with the argan oil mixed in. That product alone has such wonderful benefits!

    1. OH YES! Ok, you have to try it tomorrow and then let me know what you think!! What’s really awesome is not only do you look good with it …. the argan oil is providing huge skin benefits at the same time. WIN WIN!!

      1. I tried it yesterday and you’re right – it looks really good! 😀 I have dry skin, too, so this is a bonus for me. Thanks so much for the great tip!

  5. Congrats on finding a new magic recipe lol. I used to feel the same way about ELDW (old lady makeup) but once I tried it and it went on flawlessly I was hooked. Also, the oil trick is pretty amazing and works great with cream based foundations. It literally changes the texture and creates an incredible dewy finish. I learned about the trick earlier this year from Wayne Goss. So awesome, again Congrats!

    1. I saw that video too!!! I can’t remember which oil he used but it wasn’t Argan. I know he suggested jojoba. And a couple others which now I want to try as well! I think avocado oil could also produce some great results!! I now need to hit my Sprouts for an oil run!!

  6. Prior to reading your post, I had never heard of Match My Makeup or Findation. What a cool idea! I’ll have to try these sites. I never really bothered with foundation in the past, but now I’m searching for the right one for me. I tried a sample of the ELDW and was quite pleased with it, so I’m game to get a sample of the JM Argan Oil to try your combo.

    1. They are really accurate and great if you are trying to order foundation on line or going to a drug store where you can’t test them. If you liked DW alone, wait till you try it with the oil!! Omg!!!!!!
