Thoughts On Clarins Skin Illusion Serum Foundation

Serum Foundation Skincare

If you’re a full coverage foundation lover like me, don’t be afraid to try this.  Serum foundation hydrates your skin and provides skin benefits.  The Clarins Skin Illusion product does all that and gives you flawless coverage.  If you love BB cream but want something that also perfects your skin and allows it to breathe, this is for you!  With spring coming, this serum foundation is a perfect choice!  Just keep in mind, it’s  SPF 15 so you should wear additional sunscreen with the product outdoors.
Clarins Skin Illusion has mixed reviews on their website.  I couldn’t understand how someone could give this product a crappy rating.  I read the negative reviews and people loved or hated this with no in between.  What I noticed was those that didn’t like Skin Illusion were comparing it to previous Clarins products that were discontinued.  They were expecting this new foundation to be a replacement for what they previously used.  I guess the new product is different enough that it really frustrated people who were looking for something specific.  However, if you aren’t comparing this foundation to something you have used for umteen years, I think you will fall in love.  It delivers exactly what the product descriptions says.   Ultimately, you need to experience a new product without bias and a new set of eyes.
Clarins Foundation Skin Illusion
My skin has some dark patches and tends to be red.  This is why I like full coverage foundation.  The Clarins Skin Illusion looked beautiful on my skin and lasted all day.  I was wearing it one evening and my husband made a comment about how smooth my skin looked.  Ok, that never happens! He may notice a lipstick but never foundation!  My skin looked flawless with this foundation.  From the moment I put it on, my skin was silky, even-toned, and radiant.

Clarins describes the product as having buildable coverage and it definitely does.  It doesn’t cake up even if you apply a heavy amount.  There is an HD Light Optimizing Complex with pink pearls that makes my skin look fresh and radiant.

The Clarins Skin Illusion has red jania extra extract derived from a type of seaweed known its ultra- moisturizing and protective properties due to the high concentration of minerals and trace elements present in its tissue.  You can read more about red jania here.  This foundation also has Mary’s thistle oil leaves to soften skin and organic Leaf of Life extract which offers long-lasting hydration.  With all this goodness, you don’t have to feel guilty if you fall asleep with this stuff on!

As far as application goes, you don’t need fancy tools to apply this.  There is a glass dropper and you simply put the serum on your fingertips, warm it a bit, and pat onto your skin.  Honestly, I felt this product transformed my complexion.  Without anything else on my skin, I had a lit from within glow and there wasn’t a trace of product sitting on the surface of my skin.

Skin Illusion swatches

Clarins Skin Illusion comes in 18 shades and you can see all the swatches here.  I have four light to medium shades that I have swatched for you.  I applied the swatches on the heavier side so you can see how well the foundation reflects light.

Clarins Skin Illusion Swatches
Left to Right: 108 Sand, 107 Beige, 106 Vanilla, 105 Nude
Left to Right: 108 Sand, 107 Beige, 106 Vanilla, 105 Nude

Originally, I chose Beige 107 but you can see it’s a bit peachy.  Next, I tried Vanilla 106 and it was perfect.  I may consider mixing Beige and Vanilla together during the summer.

What to look out for with Clarins Skin Illusion

There are just a couple things I should mention.  First, like many Clarins products, this has fragrance in it.  The scent is light and I personally think it smells really pretty.  However, fragrance in foundations and skincare can bother some people.  Also, I went a bit lighter on my shade selection.  I noticed that after a few minutes the foundation gets a bit darker.   The initial shade that I thought was perfect pulled a bit orange on me and I went a shade lighter which was then perfect.

Best Places to Buy

I’d suggest purchasing this from Clarins or Nordstrom.  If you purchase the product at Nordstrom and you decide it’s not for you, they will let you return it even if you opened it.  Also, Nordstrom allows you to return things via mail for free.  I’m not sure about the Clarins returns policy.

  1. Yesss, couldn’t agree with you more on Clarins Skin Illusion! I’ve been searching for over 2 years after my beloved EL DW started looking cakey on my aging (50 yo) dry skin. After discovering and testing Clarins I filled 3 shoe boxes with mediocre foundations that didn’t work for one reason or another. I have never looked back. This is my one and only everyday holy grail. It smooths over texture, never looks dry, soothes flakiness after tretenoin nights and has the most beautiful glow. The most magical feature of this foundation is that I can achieve a youthful dewy finish without emphasizing texture. Plus it does a super job of covering broken capillaries and sun damage. Fingers crossed it doesn’t get discontinued. Thanks for your review!!

  2. I am confused by the following substances: Methyl Trimethicone, Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Disodium Edta, Propylene Carbonate. These substances cause irritation as they clog the pores. Phenoxyethanol causes allergic reactions, I would not indulge with this. How long have you used this toning? How did your skin react after a long time of use?

    1. Perhaps you should speak to an expert on ingredients or ask Clarins customer service for more information if you are “CONFUSED”. It appears you are messaging from a beauty institution with quick and dirty courses and some pretty low ratings. You don’t seem to have any expertise or factual information to back up your claims here. ANY product, ANY ingredient can cause an allergic reaction in people -even organic and all natural products. I’m allergic to pineapple and mango so does that make it bad?

I have had nothing but stellar results using this product. This was not a sponsored review, it’s my personal opinion. I prefer these types of products to all natural ingredients which are fine for some people but not truly effective and usually cause reactions on my skin. I have had zero irritation and my skin has been even-toned and super soft since using the product. Clarins has some of the best scientists involved in their formulations. I would imagine they may have more experience than you which is why I recommend you contact them regarding your “CONFUSION”. Plus you have to figure in a lot of other variables such as dosage, the combination with other ingredients, Risk over benefits, etc.

I wish you would go troll someone else’s site!

    1. I honestly think it would be ideal for all skin types, especially since it has a lot of skin care benefits. It’s really pretty and radiant. I wore it today! =)
