I’ve always sworn by full coverage foundation but as I see the makeup trends showing us more natural and sheer coverage, I can’t help but want to explore these options. With summer arriving, I thought it was the perfect time to look for a sheer to medium coverage foundation. Of course, Tom Ford to the rescue! They just released their Soleil Flawless Glow foundation, in time for the summer. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! As a matter of fact, I have so much confidence in this brand (because I love everything!) that I ordered it online and didn’t try it in the store first! I’m so excited to share my first impressions with you!
Tom Ford describes this foundation as:
A lightweight gel-serum foundation with sheer-to-medium coverage and a satin finish that glows without adding shine.
I love serum foundations and the way they disappear on my skin. I recently reviewed the Clarins serum foundation and loved that product too. No shocker, the Tom Ford product delivered on its promise. My husband never seems to notice differences in foundations but when I first applied this one and asked for his opinion, he said I looked glowy! Ok… thank you Mr. Ford! So, let’s take a closer look at this product.
Soleil Flawless Glow packaging
Tom Ford packaging is always luxurious and this foundation is no exception. It’s packaged in a lightly frosted glass bottle with a glossy white screw top lid. Tom Ford is embossed on the front in gold lettering and there is a gold pump dispenser on top of the lid. Inside is an elegant glass dropper and the pump dispenser allows for a convenient, no mess application. It’s beautifully packaged and the bottle comes in a classic shimmery gold Tom Ford box.
I’m loving the formula of this product. I’ve worn it for three days and the finish is truly flawless. The coverage is buildable but it’s definitely not going to be something you can achieve full coverage with (no matter how much building you do). If you go over the top of it with a foundation powder such as MAC Studio Fix, then you can boost the coverage but this will take away from the beautiful finish of the foundation. I feel it offers enough coverage to satisfy someone like me who tends to lean towards full coverage foundations.
The Soleil Flawless Glow foundation is SPF 30 but that doesn’t mean you should skip an underlying sunscreen. I like to use Colorescience All Calm which helps to even out my skin tone and hide redness. This sunscreen has long term benefits and that’s another thing I like about it and why I use it under most of my makeup. It’s SPF 50 and I find it’s a nice base for a medium to sheer foundation. Sometimes, I still apply a foundation primer over the top of the sunscreen.
The Tom Ford foundation is hydrating and has a moisture complex of red fruit extracts including watermelon, lychee seed, and apple. It applies like a veil of silk and has a glowy finish (without any sparkle or shine). The finish of this product is very natural looking and it feels like there’s nothing on my skin. It’s so pretty! I’ve been using cream blush, highlighter, and concealer on top of the base and Tom Ford bronzer, of course! Then I set the foundation with a light dusting of translucent powder. This gives me a natural, flawless, even finish. It never looks cakey and it doesn’t crease anywhere. This is simply a beautiful formula. I keep thinking there is a hint of lavender that I detect when I’m applying it but it’s so subtle I can’t say for sure. Maybe that’s my imagination!
My skin type is normal to dry so I don’t know how this would wear if you have oily skin. Because it’s doesn’t sit as an extra layer of product on top of the skin that could slide around, it may work really well… but I’m guessing. I wear the shade Vellum and it’s the same shade I wear in other Tom Ford foundations. To give you something to compare this to, I’m NW22 in MAC products.
I’ve applied this foundation with a brush, Beauty Blender, and my fingers. I think it’s best applied with my fingers. I typically say this with any foundation, except sticks. For me, the Beauty Blender sheers products out too much and I find the wear time is always reduced when I use this application method. Therefore, I almost never use it. As far as brushes go, I like to use a brush when I’m using a stick foundation or a thick formula. With a product like this, too much is absorbed by the brush.
I find application works best when the warmth of my fingers helps to melt the product onto my skin. So, with almost every liquid foundation, I use my fingers and I get the best marriage possible between my skin and the foundation.
(Omg, a round of applause for that analogy?)
How it wears
OK, so the one shortcoming of this foundation is the wear time. It doesn’t get me through a 12 hour day like some of the long-wearing products I have. However, I don’t have an issue with this. You can touch it up without it becoming patchy or cakey. So, if that’s a deal breaker for you, you will find touch-ups are easy and the finish still looks flawless. What I’ve noticed about the wear is at about the six or seven-hour mark, it begins to fade. It fades evenly and just appears sheerer.
Personally, I liked the way it looked as it began to wear off and I wasn’t compelled to apply more. It reminded me of how my makeup looks after being at the beach a few hours. My skin was still even-toned and the blush and bronzer were a bit more prominent. It was a different look, a sort of healthy flushed look that I really like.
Ok, I don’t know if I explained that very well! But that’s the best explanation I can offer of how I personally feel about the wear of this foundation. We’re in very subjective territory here!
Final thoughts on Soleil Flawless Glow Foundation
I would highly recommend the Tom Ford Soleil Flawless Glow foundation. For someone who loves full coverage products, I am really comfortable with this look. It offers medium coverage and the finish is stunning. Most stores will give you a sample so you can try before you buy. Some stores will let you return the product if you do buy it online and don’t like it. Just check return policies in advance. I shop Nordstrom.com because shipping and returns are free. They also allow you to return the product if you try it and it doesn’t work for you. Be sure to read the policy as certain limitations may apply.
This is a gorgeous foundation yet it is on the pricey side at $87 / ounce. However, that’s typical Tom Ford pricing. You get what you pay for with this brand so in my opinion, it’s worth it because I can’t find other products comparable in quality for significantly less money.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this product if you have tried it! I’m really interested in the Tom Ford Traceless Stick foundation if you have tried that one?
*Tip: A great website to help you find foundation matches when shopping online is Findation.com. I use it all the time and the shade recommendations are accurate.
