OZ Naturals Tinted Sunscreen and Tanning Myths
Sunscreen is an essential product in preventing premature aging, skin cancer and maintaining healthy skin. OZ Naturals has released a new product, the OZ Naturals Broad Spectrum Tinted Sunscreen, using highly effective zinc oxide and the natural UV diluting qualities of Octyl Methoxycinnamate. Before I talk little more about the product, I want to debunk a few myths about sunscreen and sun exposure.
Sunscreen protects you from ultraviolet radiation and there are two types of radiation. UVB radiation is what causes sunburns and tans and UVA radiation penetrates the skin deeper causing premature aging, wrinkles, and sagging. The UVA radiation also speeds up the cancer causing effects of the UVB rays so it’s important you protect yourself from both types. The UVB rays are not harmless! Forget this stuff you hear in the tanning salons that their tanning beds don’t expose you to the damaging radiation. They most certainly do. The FDA reclassified the sunlamps used in tanning devices in June 2014 and they are no longer considered low risk. They are now classified as medium risk medical devices.
Both UVA and UVB rays are damaging and going to make you look older much sooner than I’m sure you prefer. For those of you that don’t burn, you are still at high risk and the radiation is damaging your skin cells. Sunscreen not just a summer necessity, you are exposed on cloudy days and exposure varies depending on weather, location, latitude, and other factors. The biggest crock i hear is you need to expose yourself to the sun to get an adequate dose of Vitamin D. Uh no, this is very wrong! You can get plenty of Vitamin D from fatty fish, egg yolks, and other foods. There are also supplements. You don’t need to lay out in the sun to get a dose of Vitamin D.
Sunscreen is also just as much of a necessity whether your skin is light or dark. The more melanin your skin has, the slower the DNA damage but regardless of how dark you are, you are are not immune to the cell damage that the radiation causes. Also, your lips, back of your neck, scalp, and ears are exposed but people often don’t apply protection to those areas. Do apply a broad spectrum sun screen product to all the areas of your body that are exposed to the environment. And finally, keep it fresh because sunscreen expires. Look at your products and be sure you aren’t using an expired sunscreen because that will greatly reduce the efficacy of the product.
What type of sunscreen do I use?
A broad-spectrum sunscreen offering protection against both UVA and UVB rays. My makeup, skin moisturizers, and other products in my daily routine have sunscreen and usually for someone like me who is not outside an SPF 15 is enough to keep me safe. (I say usually but I still use SPF 30 on all exposed areas of my skin everyday) If I plan to be outdoors, I use more protection and cover all the areas of my skin that are exposed. The first thing I think is yuck! I have tried gels, lotions, sprays and I’ve used drug store brands and high end lines. I still use the products despite how gross they are but I usually feel like I need a shower immediately after putting anything on. My hands are greasy and I just feel disgusting!
A Better Sunscreen Solution
For the first time, I actually have a better option for you and me! I’ve used the new sunscreen released by OZ Naturals which is the Age Defying Solar Shield – Broad Spectrum Tinted Sunscreen . I was given a sample of the product to test and completely shocked that their sunscreen didn’t have any of the issues I had hated so much in other products. First of all, it’s a tinted moisturizer so your skin maintains hydration when exposed to the sun. The sunscreen is very sheer but it does offer some assistance to even out your skin tone. Once applied, there is no smell or residue! There is no tacky, sticky, or greasy feeling. It feels like a light-weight moisturizer that gets absorbed by my skin and is then undetectable. I have never come across a product that felt as clean as this one does on my skin. Now, this is a sunscreen that I don’t dread putting on.
I have tested the OZ Naturals sunscreen on my face and I applied makeup over it just fine. However, all my makeup has sunscreen and I use makeup primer on my face and neck that has an SPF 30 every day from Repechage. I’ve discussed this product in a previous post and I use it daily. So, I don’t need sunscreen on my face, but I tested the OZ product to see how it would affect my makeup and I had no complaints. I applied the sunscreen, followed by makeup primer and then my regular makeup routine. I like applying the OZ Naturals product to my arms, hands, legs, and feet because I like how it balances out my skin tone and I like the moisturzing effects of the product. You should be using about 1 ounce of product if you apply it all over your body so you can use that to gauge how much you would need if you were just applying it to your arms or legs. Also, if you are fully exposed to the sun, you should reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours (and after heavy sweating or swimming).
I have watched several family members have cancerous growths on their skin removed. Tans look real pretty, I get that. But trust me, it’s not pretty when you are a few years older and are having growths burned off your face and arms or carved out of your body. It’s even worse when you don’t catch skin melanomas early and they grow deep enough to result in disfiguration upon removal. Some forms of skin cancer can get into your blood stream and make their ways to other parts of your body. It’s very serious and very dangerous. If you love to tan, use a sunless tanning product. I don’t know much about the safety of those but at some point, I’ll research that. I definitely have not heard any major warnings associated with sunless tanners.
If you haven’t worn sunscreen because you hate it, like we all do, give the OZ Naturals Age Defying Solar Shield a try because I think it’s a sunscreen you can wear comfortably and you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor!
