Dose of Colors matte liquid lipstick review

It’s no secret I love lipstick and lashes!  My two favorite beauty items!  I’m so excited to share information and swatches with you from the Dose of Colors matte liquid lipstick collection.  I love the look of matte liquid lipstick but I hesitate to buy them because I come across very mixed reviews of many formulas.  Not to mention, I’ve had some bad experiences with quite a few formulas I’ve tried from other brands.

Problems with matte liquid formulas?  Uh yeah, where do I begin?  They can wear off unevenly, be uncomfortably drying to wear, flake and crumble off your lips (always a joy), and appear patchy.  There is quite a bit that can go wrong with these products and everyone has a collection on the market.  Some of them don’t even look pretty on the lips because they settle into the natural lines of the lips and look horrible.  Even worse, I’ve seen some crack (devastating)!  I’ve had to ask myself, who wants that?  Well, I’m back on a quest to find long wearing, high performing matte liquid lipstick that looks good.  I’m not going to focus on the many duds I have come across but I am going to tell you that I discovered Dose of Colors matte liquid lipstick and I love their product!  The formula from Dose of Colors wears beautifully and they have gorgeous wearable shades.  They are also easy to blend together to create more variations.

I know greens and blues are very popular, but for me, they aren’t wearable because I work in an office.  I’m looking for colors I can wear to work that suit my lifestyle.  Dose of Colors has an incredible color range in their matte liquids and they are so popular they can’t keep them in stock.  I discovered them on Instagram and I’m so glad that I did.  I bought a few, fell in love, and began buying more as they came into stock.  I love their glosses too!

The Dose of Colors matte liquid lipstick is not drying.  The one color that I had to work a little harder with to get an even application was Coral Crush,  A few extra strokes and it goes on just fine.   I have not tried all the colors in my collection yet but of those I have tried (Stone, Bare with Me, Truffle, and the glosses), have me hooked and I’m a huge fan.  I got turned onto these after seeing an Instagram picture of someone wearing Stone on the Dose of Colors Instagram page.  Here it is:

After seeing that shade, I was sold!  The Dose of Colors  Instagram page is filled with stunning looks that will make you want every color.  Beware if you visit, look what’s happening to me!  I’m binging.  I bought Stone and Truffle first and Stone looks a little different on me but I’m not wearing the Rose gloss and the picture above was not likely an iPhone pic, whereas mine is (with the front camera).  Therefore, color and photo quality is going to vary.   Bottom line, it’s a gorgeous color and I don’t see a color in their collection I don’t want!  Here I am wearing Stone:

So, let’s jump in and look at the swatches of the colors I have and then I’ll tell you a little more about how they wear.  Are they perfect?  Well, no not perfect but pretty close.  They are one of the best formulas I’ve come across so far!  Next up for review is Jeffree Star but that collection doesn’t have as many wearable shades as Dose of Colors.

The Dose of Colors glosses are opaque and long wearing.  In the swatches below, you can see Rose is not as glossy or shimmery as Bellini.  These glosses wear beautifully over the matte liquid lipsticks.  Rose is the perfect shade to wear over Stone.  Bellini is perfect over Bare with Me or Truffle.  It seems all the glosses are designed to wear with the  lipsticks and matte liquid shades, however, they are also very pretty when worn alone.  The swatches below are one back and forth swipe on my hand.  The glosses are highly pigmented!

I’d definitely recommend you experiment wearing the glosses alone and over the mattes or regular Dose of Colors lipsticks.

How does the Dose of Colors matte liquid lipstick formula wear?

The formula wears better than most liquid lipsticks I’ve tried.  It’s easy to get an even application and the formula dries quickly but not so quick you feel rushed when working with it.  It does not crack or look dry on the lips.  The lipstick does not settle into the fine lines of the lips either.  It maintains a creamy soft look once dry.  There is very little slip once it’s dry but the formula is quite comfortable.  Using a gloss over the matte lipstick will give you a bit of slip if you like that feeling but of course, then it’s not totally matte!

They matte liquids work well with or without a liner and are easy to apply.   I often wear mine without liner.  After eating, I may feel like I need to touch up the lipstick but when I look in a mirror, I realize it looks fine.  The color is still there but the texture may feel a little sandy or gritty.  I don’t know how else to describe it but that’s the way it feels on my lips as the day progresses or after I eat something where the food touches my lips.  At at about the 6 hour mark, I can still see the color and it’s not patchy.   It does fade around 6 hours but the fade is even.  The slight gritty feeling is not something that is visible.  This product doesn’t flake or rub off like a lot of other formulas.  I touch mine up when I notice the gritty feeling.   Even as the color fades, there is some stain left behind so some color remains and appears even.   I have gotten some feedback, very little though, that people have struggled with some of the darker formulas.  I can’t speak to that since I haven’t tried them yet.  I believe they were limited edition holiday colors that were an issue for some people.

All in all, Dose of Colors matte liquid lipstick is a gorgeous product and it wears extremely well.  As you can see, I’m buying them up!  I love their gorgeous shades and it’s fun to mix them together to create new colors.  If you are looking for matte liquid lipsticks, Dose of Colors at $18 USD is a great product and excellent value!

I’d love to hear your thoughts!  If you plan to try them, tell me what colors appeal to you or do you already have some that you love?  Can you recommend any other matte liquid lipsticks?

You can purchase these lipsticks on the Dose of Colors website or a California based stored called Naimie’s Beauty Center.  I do find both companies will have different colors in stock so check both if you are looking for something specific.  Dose of Colors will ship international.  You can join their mailing list to get notified when products come in stock.  Enjoy beauties!  I’m sure you will love these if you try them!

  1. Thank you for the review. Been eyeing Dose of Colors for awhile now. Love their colors. Makeup Monsters had a small discount and decided to buy those instead. Now DOC has two new shades Los Anjealous and Campfire. Soon as I have some extra money I am trying this brand out. Haven’t tried too many brands I find most uncomfortable and drying. The reviews make me hopeful DOC will be different.

    1. I haven’t tried Makeup Monsters. They look nice though! I really love Dose of Colors and their shades are very wearable. Jeffrey Star has an awesome formula as well and in the same price range. His product line doesn’t have as many shades that are “everyday” colors you could wear to work though. But… a great formula for sure! I think you’d be very happy with Dose of Colors. I did buy a couple of their glosses and if I ever feel a bit dry I just add a little. Stone with Rose gloss is to die for!

      1. Oh I can totally imagine! Haven’t had a chance to try them out and have stopped myself from finding out if they ship here (self preservation 😉

        1. OMG, if you try one, I guarantee you will be buying more and more and MORE. The only color so far that disappointed me was Cork. It looks so pretty on people in photos but on me? WOW WOW WOW – hideous. =( I love Stone, Truffle, Berry… all just gorgeous shades. Worth a try for sure!!!!!

  2. Great review! Do you find the matte lip colors wear differently when you wear a gloss on top? Transferring, fading, lasting time, etc? I just bought a few matte lips for my bridal clients and would love to hear your feedback for those clients who want a glossy lip 🙂 Thank you!

    1. I would say they do wear and feel better with the gloss. Jeffree Star will wear longer but colors aren’t as pretty. With liner and Dose of Colors and a gloss… You can go 5-6 hours! I haven’t worn the darker ones though.

  3. I’ve been eyeing Dose of Colours, but the price is so intense and hurts my heart. Admittedly, I’m not a fan of all their colours, but their reds are love and so is Stone.

I’m totally jealous and gushing over your lip shape, as odd as that sounds.

    1. Stone is my favorite. Thank you so much for the compliment on my lips! =)
I would say these lipsticks are a good value compared to the price of others on the market outside drug store brands. A lot of them I find that are more than 18.00 were not good at ALL. Very sad. If you compare to something like Colour Pop, these are a lot more but these are also night and day when you compare performance and how they wear. They have several gorgeous reds, I need them! Maybe treat yourself to one for a special occasion. =)

  4. Great post! I’ve been wanting to try these for quite a while now. I’ll have to get on these as well as the ColourPop ones. You should try the LA Girl Matte Pigment Glosses. They can apply a bit difficultly and some of the formulas are thin so they take a couple of layers to apply (plus they dry fast), but in my experience the colour payoff is amazing and they last for a while…kiss proof in my experience as well haha!

    1. If you try these, tell me what you think and your favorite color! I am totally completely head of over heels in love with this line. I need more but my wallet is telling me to please wait as is my husband but they are sooooo pretty. LOL I also bought their Hidden Treasures eye shadow palette which I’m getting ready to swatch and review. Very beautiful foiled shadows. I will definitely look up LA Girl! Thank you for the awesome tip!! I love finding out about new goodies!

  5. Dose of colors Rose and Stone shades are looking awesome,… I usually have issues with liquid lipsticks, not very fond of them,.. Need to check these out,.. Thank you for the review,…

    1. Yes… those are my favorite colors! That combo is so pretty! I have major issues with the liquid lipsticks as well. I’ve gotten some hideous formulas but these are wonderful! Are you loving your Nuface? Do you use it everyday?

    1. I’ll have to check those out! Are the Gerard lipsticks good quality and long lasting? It’s hard sometimes to buy stuff when you can’t see it or try it in the store. I was out of comfort zone when I bought these but it totally worked out.

      1. i think for the price they are great and long lasting enough – no kisses allowed though from my husband LOL I think best to wait for when they have a sale 5 lipsticks for $40 – xoxo

        1. They have sales at 5 for 40? If that happens, I’ll faint. I just bought 2 more at full price. Plus, I’ve been collecting a few colors for a gift for someone. If I got 5 for 40, well…. I don’t know what I’d do! LOL

    1. Those are fall colors! I’m buying up the entire collection. The hawk over here is on notify for them to come in stock. LOL
I’m in Looovveeeeee. Now, I must compare to the first few Jeffree Star lippies I bought.
