Create Perfect Beach Waves

Garner Whole Blends Apple and Green Tea Products Hair Care

There are so many pretty hairstyles to wear during the summer months. One of the most popular has always been beach waves.  You know, the messy waves when your hair is kissed by salt water and dried by the sea breeze?  Yes, those!  The messy waves that look effortless yet take so much time and effort to recreate in your own bathroom.  It’s actually not difficult and doesn’t have to be time consuming.  I have a technique to share with you that not only works on short or long hair but also minimizes the use of heat so you don’t risk causing damage to your hair.  Don’t believe me?  Hang in there, we are seriously going to create something amazing together using Garnier Whole Blends REFRESHING HAIR CARE WITH GREEN APPLE & GREEN TEA EXTRACTS!

The first trick to getting perfect beach waves is to have hair that moves!  This means no need for back-combing, excessive styling products, or shampoo and conditioner that weighs your hair down.  For this tutorial, I’m using Whole Blends Refreshing Hair Care with Green Apple & Green Tea Extracts.  This is a wonderful set of products that allows me to create light and airy beach waves.  The formula is paraben-free and made with wholesome ingredients gentle enough for daily use.  The Whole Blends Refreshing Hair Care formula I chose boosts shine and revitalizes the hair.  There is also a wonderful 5-in-1 spray that detangles, softens, lightly conditions, and protects the hair.  And the scent?  It is enchanting, fresh, and summery!  Truly, a delight!

The Whole Blends Refreshing Hair Care products are ideal for me as I don’t want my hair weighed down.  Also, I genuinely appreciate the brands commitment to creating a line of products that are environmentally responsible.  A perfect match for my lifestyle and my hair needs.  Garnier purchases ingredients fairly and sustainably to support local farmers and communities.  They demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.  That means something to me and I feel good about using the brand knowing this is their philosophy.

So, now that we have the perfect products to create summery and natural  beach waves, let’s get to it!

Tutorial:  How to Create Perfect Beach Waves

What you will need:

  • Whole Blends Refreshing Hair Care (I opted for the Green Apple and Green Tea Extracts collection since I needed something light weight that would also boost shine and revitalize my hair)
  • Styling clips or bobby pins
  • Optional: Round hair brush
  • Optional: Large barrel curling iron (1 1/4″)

Step 1 – Wash and protect your hair

Preparing hair to style with beach waves

To begin, I washed my hair with Whole Blends Refreshing Hair Care and towel dried it.  I used the Whole Blends 5-in-1 Lightweight Spray to detangle, add shine, and protect my hair.  No other styling products are needed (so convenient!) unless you would like to use a bit of hair spray later.

Step 2 – Air dry or blow dry hair (no styling necessary)

Round brushing hair to smooth ends

It’s great if you can allow your hair to dry naturally.  I have a lot of hair and that would take forever so I use my blow dryer (you can see it is a well-loved device).  Sorry, I know my dryer is hideous but we’ve been together for years!  My ends can get frizzy so I tame them with a round  brush. This isn’t needed unless your ends are unruly.  No other styling effort is necessary.

The key is to get your hair about 95% dry.

Step 3 – Create pin curls and secure with styling clips

how to create pin curls to get beach waves

You can see in the above photo, my hair is almost entirely dry now.  Beginning with a one inch section of hair, place two fingers underneath the hair and wrap it loosely around your fingers.  Slide your fingers out of the loop and use a styling clip to keep the loop in tact.  This is called a pin curl.  The smaller the sections of hair you use, the tighter the curls will be.  I’m using larger sections to get loose soft waves.  Varying the size of the sections of hair used to create the pin curls creates a really pretty effect.

Step 4 – Wrap all hair and allow it to set

Create pin curls

The pin curls are finished and I’ve wrapped large sections all over my head.  Now, it’s time to let the curls set.  This is an ideal time to do chores or put on makeup.  You need about 30 minutes for the curls to set.  You can use a light weight hairspray to increase the setting of the curls.  If you’re in a rush, you can also use a blow dryer to get the remaining moisture out of the hair.

Step 5 – Remove styling clips and shake out curls

Using Garnier to Create Perfect wavesAfter approximately 30 minutes, your hair should be completely dry and you can begin removing the styling clips.  You will have clumpy waves and that’s perfect.  The longer you can leave the pin curls in, the better your waves will be.  Once the clips are all removed, begin to run your fingers through your hair to soften the curls and shake them out.  The curls will come together and be soft and full of body.

Step 6 – Add some finishing touches

Adding Finishing touches to beach wavesIf you prefer to have more definition around your face or some areas didn’t curl well, use a large barrel curling iron for finishing touches.  I usually add one or two curls on each side beside my face for extra definition.  Gently shape the curls and I prefer to use a light weight hair spray for hold.

All finished!  Enjoy your soft, natural sexy beach waves!

  1. (Whoops, got too long, wouldn’t let me reply)
I actually got a wet brush knock off, so soft and gentle! I didn’t even think to smell them. =( I like how the coconut oil one smells like subtle suntan lotion! =D

    1. It’s a pretty simple brush, so the knock off is likely the same thing! The wet brush types just comb through hair like no other! I never knew!! Now I cannot live without!

  2. Great tutorial, and this look just fits you perfectly! I’d seen this line before, but never checked it out. Guess when I run out of shampoo and conditioner I know what to pick up next. =)

    1. It’s really a nice line and they all smell really good. Definitely try next time you have to get new shampoo and conditioner. Which one would you go for?

      1. Hopefully Cocoa Butter & Coconut Oil if they have it! If not, Avocado Oil & Shea Butter. =] The honey line looks tempting, too. Will have to research them to see which one works best for dry, damaged, frizzy, curly hair. =[

        1. The honey line smells really amazing! I think they are all good and all are nourishing for the hair. I can’t wait to hear which one you pick when you get a new shampoo. My husband likes using the apple one too (so cute).

              1. So, I ended up getting the Coconut Oil & Cocoa Butter line and picked up a brush for wet hair while I was at it. My hair has been doing a million times better, but I’m not sure which one to thank?! Let’s just say both. =P Thanks for recommending this line!

                1. Both are AWESOME!! The Garnier shampoos are really gentle and have good ingredients and the Wet Brush??? OMG, that will be your best friend forever. I swear I LOVE THAT BRUSH! Did you smell them all when you went shopping? They are all delicious and I love that they are not over powering.

  3. I smelled these last week at the store and I swooned! Smells just like fresh crisp green apples! I’ll definitely be getting it as soon as I use up my current shampoo.
I love your step by step tutorial – also I love seeing your au naturelle face as well – so fresh and youthful! 🙂 Your hair is so LONG and gorgeous!

    1. I know the scent is really NICE! And it’s not overwhelming when you use the product…. it’s just right. I was smelling them in the store too. I thought I would get in trouble LOL. I’m so glad you liked the tutorial! My husband took a lot of photos and I guess some were really hideous (LOL). He deleted them before I could see them! HAHAHAH. Thank you so much for the compliment. You made my day! =) ***HUGS***

      1. Aw bless your hubs, he’s just trying to catch you in the best angle / light. Mine would likely take a horrid photo of me and then make it his desktop background as a joke! 😛

        1. I think he saved a couple though to blackmail me. Years ago, when we worked in the same office I walked in to a real gem pasted all over the 1st floor with me created in a “wanted” sign like a criminal. Horrifying Halloween joke. He never did that again and that is likely why we are still married.

  4. Wow. You did a great job on this tutorial. I think it is something I can actually follow! I’m going to try it out this weekend and I will let you know how it works. Do you recommend the green apple products or one of the other ones? My hair is kind of dry.

    1. Thank you so much Sherry! I can’t wait to hear your results. Of course, email me or message me with any questions! For dry hair, you could try the Green Apple & Green Tea extract formula, it is revitalizing and good for damaged hair. All the formulas are lovely. I haven’t tried them all but I researched them and there are some specifically for hydration that you could try out. Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. They are all made with wholesome ingredients to nourish your hair and I think you’ll see the difference. And the smell! INCREDIBLE!

    1. “the messy wave” – Let me know how it turns out. A lot of people create them with hot styling tools but in the summer I try to avoid that to keep the hair healthier. You can get some very pretty effects playing with the size of the curls you make! I can’t wait to see how yours turns out! Be sure to let me know.

    1. I’m glad you liked it! I’d love to see a photo or simply hear about the results you get. I had lots of fun creating this tutorial for you guys!
