I’m preparing for an anniversary party! My party! Early this summer will mark twenty years my husband and I have been sweethearts and our eighteenth wedding anniversary. We are planning to host an intimate dinner for our closest friends and family. I’m very excited and I want beautiful photos of us at the event. Since I’m going to be in photos, I need to get photo ready! I’ve waited until the last minute to get photo ready in the past and had some unexpected issues to deal with as a result. I always learn from my mistakes. To avoid disappointments, I’ve compiled the best photo ready tips to share with you. These are great bridal tips but suitable for anyone attending an event where you will be the subject in photos.
Did you know a confident and bright smile is one of the most noticed things in photographs? Dingy teeth that look yellow or woody in photos will wreck everything. While a professional photographer may be able to edit photos to address this, in most cases, you won’t have that option. Teeth whitening is a must and the top priority when getting photo ready. If there’s only one thing I could do, it would be that! Since I’m thinking about everything in advance, I put together this plan. It shares everything I can think of for men and women to ensure you look your best in photos! #WeddingSmile
Tips to Get Photo Ready
2 Days Prior To Event
Manicure and Pedicure
Having a manicure and pedicure a done close to your event will reduce the risk of cracking or breaking your nails. Also, it will ensure your nails remain shiny and cuticles look neat and trim. When you plan your manicure and pedicure, be sure to have an appointment. If you usually have this service on a walk-in basis, the last thing you need is a delay if the salon is unexpectedly busy. Having an appointment will ensure your service is completed when you expect it to be and reduce unnecessary stress.
Hair and Makeup Trial
You should have already decided quite some time ago how you want your hair and makeup to look but a test run is always a good idea. That way you can be confident the results will be what you envision. Having this done a couple of days prior to the event will ensure the techniques you or your stylist use are fresh and the style or length of the hair will be the same on the big day. Be sure to fine tune any details during your trial so hair and makeup is a smooth process on the day of the event.
2 Weeks Prior To Event
Whiten Your Teeth
If your teeth aren’t white in a photo, it looks gross! When it comes to bridal beauty and looking gorgeous in photos, teeth whitening is the top priority. Two weeks prior to an event is the ideal time to whiten your teeth. I use Crest 3D White Supreme Flexfit Whitestrips to do the job and in two weeks they can whiten teeth as well as a $500 laser treatment.
The Crest Whitestrips use the same enamel-safe, teeth-whitening ingredients dentists use and provide a comfortable at home teeth whitening experience. Comfortable is a key word here. I have had my teeth whitened using the laser method and it was quite uncomfortable. Not only are you in a dental chair with your mouth stuffed full of material, but there can be pain after the treatment. For me, I had electrical zaps in my mouth following the procedure. It was so bad, I recall crouching down in a Target parking lot feeling the tingling sensation of a zap coming on. Each time the sensation came on, I had to brace myself for the pain and it lasted a couple of days. It was very upsetting. Laster whitening is on my list of things to never do again. Whitestrips are the way to go!
Crest 3D White Supreme Flexfit Whitestrips are available in drug stores, mass retailers, and on-line nationwide. The strips are worn for an hour daily for two weeks. You can purchase a kit for $64.99 USD. Check out my results after using the Crest Whitestrips for two weeks for an hour each night. Pretty nice, don’t you think?
Trim Your Hair
It’s a good idea to get your hair cut two weeks before the event. Even when seeing a stylist that frequently cuts your hair, it’s not uncommon to have a few pieces that are a touch too short. If you wear bangs, just a slight dusting can leave them too short. I’ve been there! Hair cuts always look better a week or two later. If you need a minor adjustment just prior the event, you can always have something touched up. Two weeks is enough time for any pieces that are a touch short to grow. Also, if you color your hair, it’s important you have enough time for any color corrections to be made.
Never get a brow wax too close to a special event. If the skin around your eyes is traumatized or irritated from the wax, you will need at least a week to recover. I’ve had my brows waxed in a spa for years but once in a blue moon when the fabric is ripped off, so is my skin. It’s always devastating when that happens. Other times, little bumps form or I develop irritation that can take up to a week to clear up. It’s best to get any waxing done about two weeks prior to an event. It’s unlikely you would need any touch ups and if your skin doesn’t come through perfectly, there’s plenty of time to heal.
1 Month Prior To Event
Test Self-Tanning Products
Self-tanning products can be a nightmare when it comes to photography. What you see in the mirror is not always how you appear through the lens of a camera. Tanning beds are not safe but self-tanning products are a great solution if you want a sun-kissed look. Just be sure to test the product out at least a month in advance. This includes taking a few indoor and outdoor photos to be sure the color is what you expect on camera. If you don’t like it, there is time to allow your skin to shed the unfavorable color and return to a natural looking state before you are in front of the camera.
Watch What You Eat
It’s so important to watch what you eat a month before your event. Especially if you tend to eat more when you are stressed. It’s easy to gain a couple of pounds a week. If you were to gain eight to ten pounds prior to an event, that’s going to be obvious to you when you see yourself in photos. Try your best to eat a healthy and well balanced diet so you don’t put on surprise pounds. If you need to lose five pounds, a month in advance will give you the time to achieve that goal as well.
Changes To Your Skin Care Routine
Never make major changes to your skin care routine within a month of taking important photos. It may take a couple of weeks in a new routine to see negative effects of products on your skin. So, it’s best to leave your existing routine in place and not take any risks no matter what the product promises. Last year, I was very excited to get a luxury facial and derma planing and a few days later, I experienced the worst break out of my life. I am not a person who has ever experienced acne and I was devastated with the results of the facial. It took over two weeks for my skin to clear up. Unless your situation is so bad that you have no where to go but up, it’s best to stick with your existing routine and avoid unpleasant surprises.
So, there you have it. The best tips to get photo ready and best tip I can offer which is an affordable way to get a beautiful smile. This past weekend, my husband and I visited Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn which is my favorite Arizona restaurant and where I plan all special occasions. Here are some beautiful photos from the grounds that show case the beauty of Arizona. I can’t wait to celebrate our twenty years together in this stunning venue!
What about you? Do you have any additional tips to consider to get photo ready? Have you ever had any disasters like I did when my skin was ripped off during my brow waxing? Please tell me I’m not the only one who has had those unexpected moments!
