6 Best Full Coverage Foundations That Look Natural 2018

2018 best luxury foundations

The hardest thing for me to purchase is foundation, especially full coverage foundations.  There are so many qualities I look for in a foundation.  The makeup rarely lives up to my expectations.  I don’t know where I’d  be today if I couldn’t return bottles of foundation I’ve opened.  They look good in the store but when I get home, I always find something wrong.  Most of them wind up going back!  I can’t be the only one that has challenges finding a full coverage foundation that looks natural.  No problem if I want to look like I’m wearing a Halloween costume but full coverage foundation on a sunny day poses some serious challenges!

Here are the qualities I look for in a full coverage foundation:

  • Long wearing
  • Not drying
  • No oxidation
  • Blends seamlessly into my skin
  • Doesn’t settle into fine lines
  • Doesn’t break up or separate on my skin
  • Weightless feel
  • Looks natural

So, that’s a long list.  No wonder I struggle.  Despite my strict requirements, I have found some products to share with you that are the best full coverage foundations I’ve used in 2018.  These are the foundations that I continue to repurchase and wear on a regular basis.  As you can see, I own each and every one and they get lots of love!

Something else I want to share is how I shop for foundation on line.  I use a tool called Findation.  It’s a great foundation matching website.  It doesn’t always have a match for everything but it’s kept up to date with new releases.  I enter several products (whether I love them or not) that are the best color match for me.  The key is entering the best shades and Findation delivers the equivalent shades in other lines.  It’s almost always spot on, therefore, I recommend it to everyone!

Here are my favorite full coverage foundations (in no particular order):

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation  $44 USD

Well, I said no particular order but Charlotte Tilbury is definitely my favorite.  First of all, her Magic Foundation wears all day and the finish is flawless.  You get full coverage without looking like a drag queen and it stays true to color no matter what weather conditions you are in.  Another big plus about this product is Charlotte Tilbury has packed it with beneficial skin care ingredients.  Seriously, packed!  Mushroom extract firms and tightens pores.  The foundation also contains Vitamin C (read my article on the best Vitamin C article here, it’s an excellent read) and hyaluronic acid to improve the appearance of wrinkles and contains ingredients to boost collagen production.  Over time, you can expect your overall skin appearance to improve while using this foundation.  I cannot put it down!

If you want to really fall in love, blend it with the Flawless Filter product.  It’s pretty hard to use anything else after this combination!  True love!  And I blend Flawless Filter with all my foundations for an extra glowy finish.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation  $42 USD

Estee Lauder Double Wear has been a long time favorite of mine.  I don’t use it as often as some of my other foundations because they don’t have great color match for me.  This is  crazy since Double Wear is available in 56 shades!   Nevertheless, for some reason, there isn’t a perfect shade match for me but I still adore this product.  Actually, I have three bottles right now!  I mix them to get the best shade.  This is a light weight, silky foundation with full coverage and it honestly wears all day.  The finish is matte and it performs well in hot and humid weather.  You’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t love this classic foundation.

La Mer Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation $120 USD

Yeah, I know the price tag.  I totally struggle with it too.  However, this is different than any other foundation I’ve used.  I have to tell you it’s worth every penny.  This stuff is liquid gold.  Next to my Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation, this is the product I use the most.  The only reason I don’t use it more frequently is the cost.  I don’t want to replace it as often as I replace my less expensive products.  The finish of this foundation is positively gorgeous and anyone who has tried it will tell you this.  It’s long wearing, luminous, pore-refining and literally weightless on the skin.  This is medium to full coverage depending on how you decide to build it up.

I tried not to fall in love with La Mer Soft Fluid but it’s so natural looking and beautiful, I bought it.  Be prepared to buy it if you try it.  Of course, with La Mer, the skin care additions in this foundation are also luxurious and the product contains their proprietary Miracle Broth.  This one is to die for!

Lancome Teint De Idola Ultra 24H Foundation  $47 USD

I have used products by Lancome for over twenty years and I always get compliments when I wear their foundations.  I have several that I like but this one is on my favorites list because it wears all day and the finish remains flawless.  The only thing that someone may not like is the consistency of this product.  It’s quite thick but still comfortable to wear and velvety.   Lancome’s foundation contains special long wearing pigments that maintain a consistent pH level with your skin.  What does that mean?  Well, it means the color doesn’t oxidize or change and the addition of Perlite and Silica make this a really good choice for people with oily skin.

This is definitely a full coverage product and a little goes a long way but despite being extremely full coverage and on the heavier side, it’s undetectable after it’s blended out.  This foundation is available in 34 shades so most people can find a great match.  This is what I used every day until I discovered the Magic Foundation but I keep this in my rotation and I always have a bottle on my vanity!

NARS Natural Radiant Long Wear Foundation  $49 USD

Find me a product from NARS I haven’t fallen in love with!  Impossible!  This is a brand that consistently delivers top quality products.  My latest foundation purchase from NARS is their Natural Radiant Long Wear Foundation but I have all the foundations in their line and I have truly loved each one.  This newer foundation from NARS is available in 33 shades and it’s ultra easy to apply.  It offers a radiant finish without looking greasy and stays fresh looking all day.  Unlike some of their other foundations, this one is a very light weight fluid but with excellent coverage and blendability.

This is another foundation formulated with beneficial ingredients to improve the look and texture of skin  over time.  It contains a complex of raspberry, apple, and watermelon extracts to support skin fibers.  Of all the NARS foundations I have used, this ones blends the best and is nearly undetectable on the surface of your skin.

By Terry Light Expert Click Brush Foundation  $58 USD

Since By Terry isn’t available in stores near me, I don’t try as many of their products as I’d like to.   I came across this foundation while shopping at Blue Mercury.  You can find the line there if you want to test the products in person and these stores are popping up in most major cities.  This foundation just made my list of favorites within the last two months.  The downfall with this one is the limited shade selection.  Also, I worry about bacteria in the brush.  There are more shades available in Europe but at this time, only six are available in the US and luckily, I found one that worked for me.

The Light Expert Click Brush foundation has a brush on the tip and the product is delivered through it.   I don’t use the brush to blend the foundation.  I use my fingers and this is a light weight cream that blends beautifully into the skin.  It’s probably considered medium coverage but don’t let that scare you off if you are a full coverage lover like me.  If you can find a shade match, this one is worth a try.  It evens out the complexion with a flawless weightless finish that doesn’t settle into fine lines and it covers everything.  This product wears all day but I haven’t pushed the limits with this one yet.

There are many other highly rated foundations that I simply haven’t tried yet.  I’ll get there eventually!  The latest one I have tested is Tom Ford Traceless Perfecting Foundation ($87 USD).  It’s on my buy list and I’m sure it will become one of my long term favorites.  It’s pure perfection!  Other products up next to try on my list are Armani Beauty Power Fabric ($64 USD), Clarins Everlasting Foundation ($44 USD), and Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer ($48 USD).

    1. OMG! The Charlotte Tilbury foundation is so fabulous! I use it almost every single day. I just got Magic Concealer and and Powder. I haven’t tried the powder but the concealer is amazing. I’m going to post about it.

    1. The NARS foundation is great but it’s definitely on the drier side, like the Estee Lauder is. If you have that challenge where the makeup sort of wants to sit on top of the skin and cake, try the Charlotte Tilbury Magic or the La Mer product. Since La Mer is kind of expensive, have them give you some samples (enough for at least 3 wears so you’ll know if it’s right for you before taking the plunge). =)

  1. Okay, so I have to try out at least one of these brands lol I also have a lot of requirements when it comes to foundations, so thank you for this extensive list! Lol

  2. I am mad about Diorskin Forever Perfect Foundation. I find the finish to be absolutely flawless and it feels so light on my skin.

    1. I absolutely LOVE Diorskin Forever. I tried it and it pulls a little pink on me. I seem to be challenged with Dior foundations which is so upsetting as I like their Star Foundation too! I’m always keeping an eye out to see if they release new shades I can wear the Dior foundation at night but during the day, it won’t match me. I do love their powders though and those work really well for me.

      1. See, now for me it’s the pink that makes it work because it most closely matches my very pale, pink-tinged skin. We’re all different, which is why I love how inclusive ranges are becoming. Here’s hoping Dior matches you soon!

        1. So lucky! What’s really stange for me is Estee Lauder has 56 shades in their Double Wear line and I have to blend them to get a match. But the By Terry foundation with 6 shades works for me. It’s amazing how the slightest change in a formula causes a mis-match. I have seen so many lines expand shades so I’m eagerly waiting for Dior (and Marc Jacobs) to add new shades.
