5 Best Mascaras in 2016 For Gorgeous Lashes

Top Rated Best Mascaras 2016

For those of you that have been following me for a while, you know that I am a true lash addict.  I want long, dark black lashes and I want to know that I am using the best mascaras!  Around this time last year, I issued a cry for help because I couldn’t find a mascara that would really WOW me.  Everyone chimed in with their favorite mascaras and for the last year, I have tried every single mascara I could get my hands on.

Part of the reason I was disappointed with my lashes was because I damaged my natural lashes wearing false ones everyday.  I have learned that it’s not a good idea to wear them on a daily basis.  At least not in my experience!  My natural lashes were pulled out or fell out when I removed the false ones each night.  This led to short lashes that lacked volume.  This is not a post about lash serums but I will tell you that I tried a lot of lash serums to grow lashes back and nothing worked except Latisse.  When I started using Latisse, within 4 weeks, my lashes were so lush and long, I took a break from using the product.  If you want to hear more about Latisse, comment below and I will do a separate post on my experience with that product.  It’s absolutely miraculous!

The 5 best mascaras I used in 2016

Over the course of the year, once I grew fabulous lashes I tested more than 40 different mascaras.  There are 5 that I can tell you are the best mascaras I used in 2016.   I’m really excited to share these with you!  Let’s jump in and talk about each of the products.  These are the best mascaras in order of my favorites!

#1 – Le Metier de Beaute – Precision Lash Extreme Chat Noir $42

This mascara is a bit pricey but it really does a beautiful job.  If you want lashes that look like you are wearing falsies, this product will do it.  This mascara is smudge-proof and lasts all day.  I’ve rubbed my eyes wearing this mascara and it still doesn’t smudge.  It goes on without clumps and creates a defined lash that will hold a curl.  You can apply multiple coats without it clumping.  This mascara gives me the closest look to wearing a false lash.  Lashes are full, very long, and hold a beautiful curl all day.  This one is worth every penny and is personal favorite mascara.  Le Metier De Beaute Precision Lash Mascara

#2 – Christian Dior – Diorshow $28.50

Best mascaras Diorshow Dior Show

This has always been one of the best mascaras according to consumers  but in 2015 Christian Dior reformulated the iconic Diorshow mascara.  If you thought it was good before, it got even better.  The new formula is enriched with microfibers which reproduce the effect of lash extensions.  This mascara creates length and stays fresh in the tube due to patented technology used by Dior.  The product doesn’t flake or smudge and goes on without clumps.  You can see the product on the brush is creamy and smooth.  This is a gorgeous mascara and usually what I recommend to people since Le Metier de Beaute is more costly.  I use this mascara several times a week.  The reformulated product is noticeably improved over the original so if you haven’t tried this, it’s definitely worth considering!

Dior Show Mascara

#3 – Benefit Cosmetics – Benefit They’re Real $24 (Also available in travel size, as shown $12)

Benefit They're Real Mascara

This is the most affordable option of my favorites.  I would not agree with the claims that state this mascara volumizes but it definitely lengthens and curls.  This mascara does not clump or smudge but it creates a slightly different look than the other products mentioned in this post.  The look is a more spiky lash.  While it doesn’t clump, the formula creates a thick coating on the lashes that produces a spiky effect.  If you like that look, this is a product you will love.  According to Benefit Cosmetics, Benefit They’re Real mascara has been the #1 best selling prestige mascara in the U.S. for 3 years.  I don’t know if this is necessarily because it’s the best.  I think Le Metier De Beaute will create a far longer and lush lash, but it’s nearly half the cost.  I would think with the travel size available and a good cost point, this product would sell more than others.  It’s another great mascara and one of my favorites.

Benefit They're Real Mascara

#4 – Givenchy – Noir Couture 4 in 1 Mascara $33

This multitasking mascara is formulated with an exclusive lash booster complex that helps revitalize, fortify, and protect lashes.  It also provides nutrition to the lashes.  It is designed to be used daily to reap the benefits of longer, even, and stronger lashes.  I can’t speak to the clinical aspects of this product as I trade off mascaras daily but this is another product that goes on beautifully without any clumping and creates an elongated lash that holds a curl.  It’s a light formula that creates a more wispy lash.   According to Givenchy,  100% of users claimed stronger, shinier, more supple lashes after 8 weeks of daily use.

#5 – Marc Jacobs – Velvet Noir Magic Volume – $26

Best mascaras Marc Jacobs

This Marc Jacobs mascara definitely creates volume and length!  It’s one of the few mascaras that does more than just add length but that comes with a drawback.  It can be clumpy.  You can see on the brush the formula is thick and heavy.  It has to be applied carefully and the product is very wet.  If you blink before it’s dry, you’ll have a bit of a mess to clean up.  At first, this was not a favorite of mine but after experimenting with it, I fell in love because of the volumizing effect.  In can smudge under the eyes, especially on hot days, which is why it’s ranked the lowest of my favorites.  However, it’s an amazing product that creates gorgeous volume for your lashes!

Best mascaras Marc Jacobs

These are all products I purchased and I would repurchase.  As I try additional formulas, I may have new favorites to share with you but for now, these are my top picks.  What are the best mascaras you used in  2016?  Do you have a favorite mascara that is not mentioned here?  Definitely leave a comment so I know what to try next!

Thanks for stopping by and I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving next week!

    1. It is sort of an in between formula (not dry but not wet either). It doesn’t transfer to the eye lid of under the eye when you apply it. And it has never flaked or smudged on me. I have a HUGE problem with mascara in Phoenix. I always find it underneath my eyes in the summer. The ones I on my list here passed the test. With Le Letier – it creates a beautiful doll-like lash. No clumps and very clean and elongated.

  1. I love Benefit & Dior one :DD My current favourite is from Armani 😀 & one really inexpensive from Avon (from their Luxe line for volume)

    1. I haven’t tried the Armani one! OMG, I haven’t tried Avon in so many years. I see they have a lot of new products and the company has evolved a lot. But I used to get it years ago in California but I’d say… it’s been about 20 years since I have tried anything!

      1. Try them both they are really great 🙂 And give avon a chance again-I know they are not drugstore but if someone asks what’s my fav drugstore brand I always say avon (cheap, easily available )

  2. I was just looking at the LMDB mascara the other day with black friday sales!! But i didn’t in the end because i’ve never heard of anyone raving about it… wished i had seen this post earlier!!! I like all your other picks, except Benefit. I literally poked my eye with it and it was fckg painful!!! rofl….

    1. I don’t see many (not sure if I’ve seen any, actually) bloggers posting about Le Metier de Beaute products. I discovered them while researching luxury subscription boxes. They have a VIP plan I joined and that’s how I was introduced to the brand. Their products are fabulous and their mascara is absolutely my #1. It’s really fabulous! It’s also more expensive than most but well worth it! LOLOLOL I have poked my eye a few times with mascaras and I get really annoyed when I slip and smash the wand over my perfectly done eye shadow. OMG, nightmare. That’s like an instant 30 min added to make makeup routine.

    1. You are so welcome! The Givenchy one is beautiful! I love the wand because it creates a wispy lash. Each one of these mascaras creates a very different look. Any other favorite posts you’d love to see? I really have fun with them! =)

  3. I too am such a Mascara snob! Two I repurchase time and time again are the too faced better than sex and benefit roller lash. I have used a tube of the new Marc Jacobs one and loved, but oddly didn’t repurchase for what that’s worth. I really enjoy they’re real but find it impossible to take off and I just don’t have time for that on the daily.
I’m definitely intrigued by the Metier one, I’ll have to look into it further 🙂 And YES please do a post on Latisse!

    1. You have to try Le Metier de Beaute. You know what a lash freak I am. I have nothing else that does what it can do. It’s really fantastic. It’s creates a perfect doll-like lash. VERY LONG! I’ve heard really great things about the new Tarte mascara but I haven’t tried it yet.

  4. I also really like the one by Givenchy and They’re Real (of course). My favorite this year has to be Tarteist! It is hands down the best mascara that has touched my lashes, I am so obsessed. Thanks for a great round up! Loved it!

  5. Love the sound of the Givenchy, I’ve never thought of trying their mascaras before. I have the worst, most stubborn asian lashes that need curl, hold, length, volume, the works! So will definitely look into some of your picks – the MdB sounds great as well! Thanks for sharing lovely

    1. If your lashes are really stubborn, Le Metier de Beaute is the best mascara I’ve used to date. A lot of mascaras look great at first, but then 5 hours later … where is the mascara? This stuff stays on and lashes look gorgeous. The Givenchy one is super pretty, the wand creates a more wispy effect. I like to create different looks. But if you get a Tweezerman lash curler and Le Metier De Beaute and you heat up the curler a touch before you curl your lashes? They will be staying all day! =)

  6. Janine, I too am constantly on the hunt for a mascara that will WOW me. I have tried most of the ones you picked out for this post, except for the Le Metier one, and I agree, they’re all some of the best out there. I haven’t tried much Le Metier but have heard they make incredibly luxurious products, so I might have to start with the mascara.

I would really appreciate it if you could do a post on Latisse and your experience with it. I have been tempted for years now, but have yet to take the plunge. Thank you so much in advance!

    1. I will do a post on Latisse in early to mid December. It’s absolutely fantastic! NOTHING WORKS LIKE THAT STUFF! The Le Metier de Beaute mascara definitely stands above all the rest. It is such an incredible product. All their stuff is just beautiful and I discovered them through their VIP subscription program. I subscribed and each month I get a box and I’m so glad I did. When it opens again for 2017, I will definitely subscribe again. WONDERFUL STUFF!

        1. I wish I had a before picture of my lashes. They were so sad. But I get quite a few of the current shots and you’ll see they are crazy full. My husband keeps telling me to stop using it because they are too long which means I need to keep going! LOL

        1. Not sure which mascara you are referring to? None of them are hard to get off if you use a good eye makeup remover. Lancome makes an excellent product that gently removes eye makeup and is very effective. Dior is probably the driest of the formulas I mention if you are looking for a dryer formulation.

  7. I just can’t wrap my brain around high-end mascaras! Out of your list I’ve tried Diorshow and Benefit and I would not repurchase either of them. I just love LOVE my drugstore mascaras – CoverGirl LashBlast being my HG. I’ve tried countless samples of high-end mascaras and they honestly do not perfume 3 or 4 times better. But they sure do COST 3 or 4 times more than the drugstore ones! 😛

    1. Did you try the NEW reformulated Diorshow or the original formula? I THINK I have Covergirl LashBlast and if I do, I’ll try it! I don’t buy much from the drugstore. I do like the Loreal Voluminous but in Phoenix, when it’s hot? That stuff is like all over my face and I look like a Panda. Le Metier de Beaute is phenomenal but it’s super costly. But I rub my eyes a lot and that doesn’t even smudge. What other drug store ones should I try?? I can buy a bunch and try them all out!! Now that I grew real lashes, I’m always wanting to try new mascaras!
